Book review

I never thought I would read a Star-Trek novel, let alone give a Star-Trek novel five stars, yet here we are. This novel was absolutely fantastic, and I found myself nearly yelling at the characters at certain places in the book.
Having said that, I will say that I would not recommend this as someone’s first Star-Trek novel unless they met some very specific criteria. First, you should be a ‘Next Generation’ fan. Second, you should like and/or care about commander Riker and Deanna Troi. Finally, you need to go into this understanding what you are getting. This isn’t an action-packed phaser-fest. There are a few action scenes, but they don’t start until after the halfway mark of the book, and even then there aren’t a ton of them. There also aren’t many starships in this novel – just a short scene or two near the beginning and then at the end.
What this story is, however, is a love story-and a darned good one (especially if you already like these characters). There is far more dialog than action, but it really works for this story. That’s not to say that it is boring or has pacing issues – far from it. In fact, the action that it does have is that much more exciting since you aren’t being inundated with it.
