cover The Warlord Wants Forever

Book review

I absofreakinlutely adore this series. I cannot remember exactly how I came across it or how many times I have re-read it since, but for years it has been one of my favourites and my go to book when I feel like reading something awesome but can’t be bothered starting something new.
The Warlord Wants Forever is a novella that is set just before/during the events in the first book of the Immortals After Dark series.

The story centres around two fabulous characters – Myst and Nikolai. Myst – or Myst the Coveted as she’s known by – is a Valkyrie, a though and fearsome creature in the Lore. Her kind are beautiful, independent women who can best almost all in battle. They are fearless, they are strong, and they are born from Gods. Myst – like all her sister Valkyrie’s – is known amongst the law for her fierce nature and all creatures great and small fear her wrath. Myst does what she wants, goes where she wants, kills who she wants. So blooding a vampire is the very last thing on her to do list – but that’s exactly what she inadvertently does. And not just any vampire but Nikolai Wroth, an overbearing, domineering warlord.
Nikolai Wroth is a vampire, and as a vampire knows nothing of the Lore. His kind are hated by all and it is against the law for anyone to teach them anything about the Lore and it’s creatures. So when he bloods Myst the Coveted, he has no idea what she is and exactly the kind of powerful being he has just crossed.

‘I’ll being with the most basic. What are you?”Pussy Cat Doll?’ She asked, immediately doing a slow head shake at his look. ‘Judge jury, and executioner.’ He scowled. Her eyes lip up. ‘Transient! What? Really. No? Babe in Toyland?’

At their first meeting with Nikolai blooded and reading to bed his bride – Myst bailed leaving him wanting and in pain. And she didn’t look back leaving Nikolai to search for her for five long and agonising years. And when he finally found her he gained the ultimate power over her – her chain.
A chain that can control her every move by those who wield it. Until now it has never been broken – no matter how hard Myst has tried too – until Nikolai got his hands on it, giving him the ability to command her every move. Nikolai is wanting revenge on his cruel bride, and she is wanting to be free at any cost.
Myst is an interesting character. She is strong willed, sarcastic, independent and likes her life exactly the way she is – with her sisters in her creepy mansion, playing video games, panting her nails and killing things. She often comes across as this woman who needs no one but she does on occasion have a softer side. And Nikolai brings out that softer side – even when she doesn’t want him too. She knows she’s attracted to him and has no problem denying it – she just wants her freedom more.

‘Wroth, darling,’ she purred, smiling so sweetly. ‘I can’t wait for the next time I get to put my mouth on you.’ In an instant the smile faded and she snapped her teeth and yanked her head back as if she was chewing something free.’

Nikolai isn’t used to bending – he is used to commanding, but that tactic won’t work with Myst. For the first time in his immortal life he has found something he cannot control and he is completely and utterly bewildered at how to deal with her without the chain. He knows that she will leave him the second she gets it back but he doesn’t want her to. So will he use the chain to stop her from leaving even if it means he’s taking away her free will?

Kresley Cole’s characters are enthralling. They capture your attention and your heart and have you laughing so hard your crying one minute and on the edge of your seat the next. Her writing is flawless and flows beautifully, describing this magical world and the people in it so easily that you can easily imagine yourself right in the middle of it. This is what fantasy writing is all about for me and this series is the closest thing to perfection as you can possibly get.
