Book review

Another excellent addition to a series I am already getting invested in. While this one picks up from where the first left off, it is a good self contained story involving, this time, some more established Star Wars characters that appear, but by no means really feel that they’re distracting from the main plot or from the characters we’re getting to enjoy. Triple 0 and BeeTee become much, much more menacing than they were and are still delightfully insane but now a little bit more, ah, scary than they previously were.

This plotline involves the selling of an artifact found in the first book as well as individual stories with the main cast. These are, more or less, very enjoyable and I’ve enjoyed the use of a Cold Open on this series as well to tell the story, something I’ve enjoyed when done well in fiction and visual storytelling. Doctor Chelli Aphra herself remains as fun as ever and the artwork, again, is pretty gorgeous. Kieron Gillen is excelling at telling a good, solid, story that just happens to be using the Star Wars universe.

On that note, I can now, somewhat safely say that the series is enjoyable regardless of whether you are invested in Star Wars or not. It’s a good read and all you really gotta want is pulp, science fiction adventure with some scoundrels of the galaxy. Honestly, it’s what I think the movies need to take a note from truth be told and actually take the time to let us like and get to know the characters. Doctor Aphra is proof it can be done well and it’s proof nothing has to be grimdark to be good and enjoyable.
