Bone Crossed – Patricia Briggs

cover Bone Crossed

Book review

Another excellent book in this series. I’ve read it several times since it was first released and each time I find something new to like about the series. If you like strong independent women, who still know when to yield, you’re going to love Mercy. She’s smart, she’s skilled, and she’s a lot of fun to follow.

The only downside of this book is the cover–The cover is beautiful don’t get me wrong. I love the touches of the emphasize on cars to remind people she’s a mechanic, and the grease smudges on her face, the tools, etc. That’s perfect. But there are several reasons I’m frustrated with it. The book states, repeatedly, that she has one, and only one, tattoo (A coyote paw print on her belly) and yet the covers constantly shows her with full sleeves of tattoos.

They also often feel a need to emphasize the fact that she’s a Native American by giving her feathered earrings and such. I love WOC lead characters, and she’s perfect, but Mercy is not the feathered earring type and it just irks me because you know it’s only there to remind people. And the final reason is that most female mechanics dont fix cars in braless cut off shirts that are left open in front and tied off just under the breasts to emphasize them.

Mercy cleans up nice when she’s going out, heels and all sometimes, but at work she wears jeans and a t-shirt like any other mechanic. We don’t need the reminder that she’s a woman by showing off her assets like that. I’m all for scantily-clad women on covers when it fits the situation, it just really doesn’t in this case.

While the cover is disappointing the book is not! Marcy Thompson had such a quiet simple life–for a coyote shifter who was raised by werewolves. She spent her time as a mechanic, enjoying the work, and keeping her head down so she didn’t annoy the local Alpha wolf, but it’s getting harder to keep that simplicity as her life changes rapidly.

Spoilers:

This book starts one week after the last one so she is still reeling from being raped, but now she has to deal with that fact that the events were splashed all over the news, which means a lot of people asking how she is and trying to protect her, which is driving her crazy–especially when her mother comes roaring into town to check on her.

Everything is in chaos. Her vampire friend, Stefan, shows up burnt to a crisp to warn her that the ruler of the local vampire seethe, Marsilia found out that Mercy killed one of them. On top of that she’s she’s finally accepted that cranky Alpha wolf as her mate and that’s changing everything when he does something entirely unexpected and makes her a pack member.

No one even thought it was a possibility for a non-wolf to be made a member of the pack, and open to the pack’s magic, but apparently coyote’s are close enough because it works. The pack is in an uproar and it only gets worse when the vampires take vengeance on Mercy by targeting one of the pack.

And then the oddest thing happens. An old friend from college shows up, having read about the rape in the papers, and has an interesting request for Mercy. With everything going on it seems like the best thing to get out of town and go help her old friend. But the visit isn’t what she expected, nothing happens the way she plans, and she’s far from Adam and the protection of the pack.

It’s a good thing Mercy is a skilled and independent sort because she’s going to need all the wiles of her coyote side to get herself out of trouble this time!
