Boston Jane: An Adventure – Jennifer L. Holm

cover Boston Jane: An Adventure

Book review

This book is intended for people interested in Young Adult novels. The main point in this story was that Jane was always trying to be a proper lady to impress William her fiancé. The book at the beginning of the story took place in Philadelphia, then on a boat called ‘The Lady Luck’ and then on the frontier.

The main character in this book is very clearly Jane and the antagonist is her fiancé William. Even though William isn’t necessarily the ‘bad guy’ so to say but he is always causing trouble and problems for Jane even though I think that they are unintentional.

This book is about a girl named Jane who lives in Philadelphia with her father who is a widower. Her father is a doctor and a young man named William come to live with them and apprentice her dad. Jane grew fond of William but he left to collect timber on the frontier. Jane leaves Philadelphia on a ship to be with William but she gets a big surprise when she arrives. She learns how to be independent learns how to look at everything with a positive eye.

I started reading this book and couldn’t put it down. Quotes from this book are both said to Jane before she left her home as advice. The first quote was said by her teacher at school. She said ‘A lady should never, ever, under any circumstance run.’ I thought that that was really funny that those where the things ‘back in the day’ that were important. The next word of advise was given to Jane by her father. This is some real advise that isn’t so silly. He said ‘You make your own luck.’ I agree with that in so many ways. Occasionally things in life come unexpectedly and that we can’t control but we do have the power to decide what happens from there. It can either get better or get worse. Every cloud has it’s silver lining so to say.

A theme in this book is that living on the frontier is challenging. I recommend this book for anyone who likes suspense novels, romance and mystery books. There are so many qualities to this book that I think many personalities would come to like this book. One thing I found unique about this book is that it isn’t your average and typical romance. There are lots of challenges that keep Jane and William apart.

I really enjoyed reading this book. It really drew me into the story.
