Book review
Brenna, a Celtic maiden, is taken captive by a viking chieftain and taken to Norway as a slave to be given to his younger son. She is a trained warrior, untamed, wild and fierce.
Garrick, the youngest son of the chieftain, is a merchant. After his first love abandoned him for another, he has hardened his heart and trust no woman. Brenna was given to him by his father. She is unlike any slave he has ever had. He admired her spirit and courage. But she is a sassy wench and no matter how hard he tried, he cannot tame her.
Brenna wants revenge from Garrick’s father for kidnapping her and slaying her people. She longs to return to her home. She cannot stand the cold freezing nordic nights. But being in close proximity with garrick, warming his bed, day by day her resistance is slipping away as she comes to care and love the hard hearted garrick.
Until his first love, Morna, returns and wants him back and her life is threatened. Now she must protect herself and her unborn child sired by garrick because if she is not careful she just might end up dead.
Every book I’ve ever read by Johanna Lindsey has brought me immense reading pleasure. She is the best voice in historical fiction. The vivid picture that she paints with her words is unlike any other.
I’ve enjoyed this story thoroughly. The banter between garrick and brenna, their scorching chemistry. although I do admit sometimes I hate brenna because of her stubbornness and set ways, I admire her courage and vitality. The plot is a very good one. All of the secondary characters make for an enjoyable read.
Garrick raped brenna a few times and I do not condone the act. Rape is very much a part of society especially between masters and slaves. As much as we do not want to admit it, it is a very harsh reality. And men of those viking times were very chauvinistic. I am happy the author included this in the story because not mentioning it doesn’t mean it is not there. It is very much there.
