Book review
Because Buzzfeed is a thing, I’ve composed a list of what I’ve come to terms with by reading this book:
1. Susan Juby is my literary soul mate. She understands my humour; she ‘gets’ me. She can play with my emotions like a puppet master and it is quite possible she actually wrote this book FOR me. (It is dedicated to her husband, James, but I’m still not convinced)
2. I’m glad I waited a while to read Woefield since the sequel ‘Republic of Dirt’ has just been released in Canada and I can go straight into reading it.
3. Woefield is like a study in character voice. The story is told through four very diverse points of view (age, gender, and dialect all different between the 4 voices) and Juby is incredibly successful in making each of the 4 voices authentic, to the point where I actually have different ways of reading each character. It’s like I can hear them in my head. I think hearing voices in my head is typically a bad thing but in this case it is very entertaining.
4. I’m going to recommend this series to everyone who can read.
5. I’ve been told the second book is funnier but I don’t know how it could be.
6. Seth is my favourite character. How is it that a character who is an agoraphobic, alcoholic, heavy metal fan/celebrity blogger seem so authentic? I want to know Seth. I certainly don’t want to be him, but maybe I want to go on a date to Mcdonalds with him.
7. Juby writes a place well. She knows Vancouver Island, and therefore is successful in ‘writing what she knows’. I know that it’s written well because I live here and I can tell you, it’s accurate.
8. I need a third book to come out. I’ve hardly started the second one but I know I need a third.
9. You shouldn’t read this book if your dog is trying to nap. You will laugh out loud and the dog will be annoyed.
10. If you don’t like this book, don’t talk to me about it. I shall be forever biased and I will not be able to look at it from different perspectives because it may very well be my new favourite. Don’t diss a girls favourite book. It’s not polite.
