Book review
I’m so glad I picked up this audio book before I read some of the reviews for it. Goodness, some of those “fans” were harsh about this book. Yet I loved it. It was another fantastic read in this remarkable series by the talented Ms Brockmann.
Lt. (jg) Mike Muldoon may have made his way to the top of the list as my favorite of SEAL Team 16. He. Is. Swoonworthy. Maybe it’s my addiction to the totally hot and dreamy Muldoon that made it difficult for me to relate as well with his love interest, Joan DaCosta. Her big issue with the seven-year age difference did get a tad annoying at times, but not enough for me to knock the book rating down by a star—I just wasn’t that into her particular defense mechanism, I guess. She really needed to get over it.
Along with poor Muldoon trying to win the reluctant Joan, the storyline spent a good deal of time with the troubled marriage of Sam Starrett and his wife Mary Lou, who is definitely not the brightest crayon in the pack. Mary Lou is creating all kinds of trouble for Sam and making married life more difficult each day. Right when the President is on his way to the base and the SEAL Team is in the midst of preparations for his visit, too. Great timing.
Adding to this already intense plot, the author continues to weave a love story from WWII into the tapestry, reminding us of what a talented novelist she truly is. I continue to be amazed, astounded and delighted anew with each story in this series.
Readers who are concerned about heat, adult language, etc. will find that this is a novel they can share with their co-workers. Like the other books in this series, there is plenty of sexual tension, then steam between Muldoon and Joan once they get a few things settled. There’s even a fun scene between Muldoon and the President’s daughter with a certain amount of um…fun, LOL. Then of course, where there’s a realistic military story there’s adult language and violence. This is a SEAL team, not a bunch of choir boys. They don’t sit around and eat snack cakes while they play checkers all day. If they did, we wouldn’t want to read about them! 😉
