Nimona – N.D. Stevenson

cover Nimona

Nimona marks my first review of a graphic novel on my blog. I have never been a fan of graphic novels and to be honest, I am not sure I would have picked up this book if it hadn’t have been picked up by Harper and adopted by the young adult community like it has. I took a big chance with this book, and I am happy to say that it paid off. I was surprised by how much I really got out of it.

Graphic novels have a big presence in their own genre. It is incredibly rare for a graphic novel to make that jump into the young adult world. I had it mentioned to me that there have been a few that have made the jump in the past, but I have no idea what the books are which have. It just surprised me to see a type of book I never really think about make that leap and create so much buzz within the young adult world. I was impressed.

With graphics being a new thing for me, I honestly don’t really know how to go about reviewing them. It’s definitely a story, but there is so much about it that is different. For starters, when you are just reading a book you have to imagine everything in your head as you are reading the words. But with Nimona, you have beautiful art to go along with the story. Noelle has an amazing amount of talent, and to see the writing and art blend together was something I had really never thought of as being as great as it was in Nimona.

This was a really fun book, and I am sure a lot of people will really enjoy it. Will reading Nimona make me want to read other graphic novels? Probably not, but it was an amazing experience reading Nimona. I am glad I took the chance on it, and I really did love it. In the end, it’s just not my thing. Would it be great to see more graphic novels cross over into the YA world? Absolutely. I get that graphic novels have their own thing, but if they fit into the YA world, why not?

Overall, I would say this is definitely going to be a book worth checking out. While it might not have sold me on reading other graphic novels, I will say that Nimona is an incredible book on its own. I am glad to see that Noelle was able to make it crossover into the world of books that we love and I am sure it will get quite a bit of attention when it releases. If you love graphic novels already, then I have no doubt that you will love this book. I have ready maybe five graphic novels in my life, and this one by far was the most enjoyable and worthwhile one to read.

Take the chance like I did, and see what you end up thinking about the book. Don’t shy away from it just because it is a very uncommon type of book in the young adult world. If you have never read a graphic novel, just try Nimona and see where it goes. The art and story is very engaging, and it is just a really different experience for a reader. I wish I was more of a fan overall when it comes to graphic novels, but I just don’t have a huge interest in them. So the fact that Nimona held my interest, and that I really enjoyed it is saying a lot for this book and Noelle’s talent.
