Really didn’t know whether to choose ‘read’ or ‘currently reading’ because ever since we got our hands on this book last fall at the Texas Book Festival, one or both of my boys have requested it for bedtime reading countless times… just last week we read it four nights in a row. It never fails to raise side-splitting laughter from them.
Even before we got the book, a battle of ‘Rock, Paper, Scissors’ was waged nightly to see which boy had to get their teeth brushed first. So this epic history of the great on-going battle was already a perfect fit in our house.
We absolutely LOVE this book and I HIGHLY recommend to anyone and everyone. The illustrations are superb and over-the-top-dramatic in battle scenes. The language is equally dramatic – begging to be read in one’s best wrestle-mania-announcer-voice, or one’s ‘In-a-World…’ movie trailer voice…it is SO much fun to read aLOUD – to be heard over the gales of laughter.
The boys’ favorite battle scene is between Rock and Apricot when Rock looks up and provokes Apricot by saying, ‘You, sir, look like a fuzzy little butt.’ -I mean, what little boy WOULDN’T love that?? We had the pleasure of meeting Adam Rex, the book’s illustrator, at the Texas Book Festival and getting his signature for our boys’ book… he drew an apricot with a word bubble, ‘I will DESTROY James & John’ (my boys’ names) – so when we get to the part of the book where Rock provokes and then ‘smooshes’ apricot – the boys just can’t help but explode in giggles…
I hear them using language from the book in their playtime – with lego battles – or with eachother… it has brought such intense joy to our lives and now when we play ‘Rock, Paper, Scissors’ it always ends with ‘ _____(whichever warrior) is VICTORIOUS!!’ – Highly, highly, highly recommend buying your own copy for your home library.
